Who doesn’t love the fun of an advent calendar? The excitement of receiving it on the first day of December, the joy that builds up as you open a surprise each day. The anticipation of the arrival of Santa! This holiday season capture that excitement along with the spirit of giving by creating a reverse advent calendar with your family.
A reverse advent calendar project is the perfect way to teach your kids that giving is more rewarding than receiving. The whole family can get involved! Start by identifying a local charity that you would like to support as a family. It’s the perfect time to have a discussion with your kids about giving to those in need.
Plan ahead of time and check in with the organization to ensure they are open on December 24th and find out if there are any specific needs or requests.
On December 1st place a large empty basket in your home. Each day leading up to Christmas place one item to donate to charity in the basket. Have your kids select the items to give. On December 24th gather your kids and together drop off your basket to the organization of your choice.
Some suggestions for donations include books, CDs, stuffed animals, snacks, box of chocolates, arts & craft kits, puzzles and sweet treats.
~ For a Homeless Shelter you may want to add items such as scarves, gloves, hats, flashlight with batteries, and toiletry items.
~ For a Domestic Violence Shelter you may want to add coloring books and crayons, infant clothing, diapers, perfumes and cosmetics.
~ For an Animal Shelter include pet supplies such as canned food, treats, pet brush, collar and a leash.
The reverse advent calendar project is a great way to get kids (and even classrooms) of all ages involved in giving back this holiday season. Help spread the joy!
