The Gift of Memories
Birthdays and holidays are exciting times for families to gather together and celebrate. Families and friends delight in their traditions for the festivities. Gift giving, at least from a child’s point of view, is usually the highlight.
Children of all ages are typically asked for their ‘wish list,’ that never-ending list of the latest must have toys, gadgets and trinkets. For younger children, the list may include the latest action figure, doll or board game. As children grow, they ask for larger items: bikes, electronic devices, and video games. Many times the lists are so long, we think they are asking for the world – and I say give it to them! Give them the world, the opportunity to see and experience more than their backyard – give them the gift of memories, the gift of travel.
Whether traveling for a day or an extended period of time, it is an adventure for children. Day-trip adventures may include visits to local museums or animal habitats – these trips are usually educational and fun! Overnight and long weekend trips give families time to wind down together. You do not have to go far to ‘get away from it all.’ For a relaxing weekend, bring board games and family read-along books - leave the electronics at home (or turned off in your hotel).
Weeklong plus adventures usually require more planning and coordination. Be sure to include the children in this process too. Give them a guidebook and ask them for suggestions on what to see and do during the trip. Whether your trip is westward to see the Grand Canyon or the majestic redwoods of California, a visit to everyone’s favorite mouse in Florida, or a trip to Europe to walk in the footsteps of history, take lots of photos and take time to make those memories. It’s your gift for a lifetime.
