A Stolen Aesthetic: April Cooper - Opening Reception

As spring returns, Artworks Trenton is opening its door to talent in full bloom. From Tuesday, May 2nd to Saturday, June 3rd April Cooper’s solo exhibition A STOLEN AESTHETIC will be on display in Artworks’ Community Gallery. As a Trenton, NJ based artist, April Cooper creates art centered around black culture. She finds that black culture is portrayed negatively in movies and media. In opposition, her art showcases black culture as a positive experience or gathering, a proud belief of self-worth, and a nostalgic culture that is relatable. In her community, she sees this black culture, and it is reflected in her art. April uses her social media accounts to expand her ever growing audience and to create dialogue about her works, discussing the history and the meaning behind each individual piece.

Sweet Savages describes a range of emotions one may encounter at Artworks Trenton, May 2- June 3, 2023 when visiting the exhibition of these three accomplished New Jersey based artists. Minch, Petruziello and Sayegh explore private and personal thoughts through sculpture, graphite and painting respectively. Giving form to their individual subconscious thoughts and feelings brings to life imaginative and powerful artworks speaking to what it is to be human in this world through their eyes. Symbolism, self, identity, politics, spirituality and the natural world are some of the shared threads between them. Having varied approaches in medium and authentic voices in style, similarities exist that bind them to each other and most importantly to you. This is an exhibit to be enjoyed by the whole family (there are some nudes on exhibit.)
Princeton University Sinfonia Spring Concert

Sinfonia concludes the season with two musical reflections of Irish culture and a fun nod to Cinco de Mayo. As the first symphony by a woman performed by a major symphony orchestra in the U.S., Amy Beach’s Symphony in E minor opened the door for countless women composers. She boldly incorporated Gaelic melodies and quotations from her own music into the symphony. Princeton sophomore Toussaint Santicola Jones also turned to Irish myth as the inspiration for his new piece, Naked, Upon the Road to Tara. Leonora Carrington’s The Red Horses of Sidhe, a work in Princeton University Art Museum’s collection, served has his starting point. Sinfonia will also present the “Tango” and “Guaracha” from Morton Gould’s jazz-tinged Latin-American Symphonette.

In a Depression-era Harlem apartment building, a close-knit group of friends has become a chosen family. New roommates Angel and Guy — a recently fired blues singer and a promising costume designer with Paris in his sights — live across the hall from Delia, a social worker who sparks a relationship with the hardworking doctor Sam. Their lives are upturned when Southern newcomer Leland arrives and falls hard for Angel, who is torn between a stable life in New York City and an exhilarating overseas adventure with Guy. Angel chooses her path, but the decision leads to devastating consequences that shift the trajectory of everyone’s futures and long-held dreams.

From Our Grounds to Yours, Grounds For Sculpture’s fourth annual Spring Plant Sale, will feature a unique selection of annuals, perennials and shrubs, as well as a variety of GFS propagated terrariums, trees, and succulents. Our Horticulturist, GFS gardeners and volunteers will be on hand during the sale to answer questions and share garden-planning advice. All proceeds support GFS’s horticulture department. Darla Rich Jazz at Small World Coffee

Rich and Darla Tarpinian are based in New Jersey and have been a part of the local jazz scene since 2000. Their music has been appreciated by audiences of all ages. They have played concerts, public and private events as well as libraries, restaurants and wineries. Their repertoire includes jazz, standards, pop nostalgia as well as original compositions. Through creative expression and improvisation, they seek to present their musical selections in a way that complements the composer's rich melodies and harmonies.
